First, understand that justice isn’t always about the truth. Often a just decision is handed down simply because one side made the more compelling argument. Mistakes are made. In the 1993 case of Anthony Wright, he was convicted of killing an elderly woman in North Philadelphia, after police claimed he voluntarily confessed AND that they found clothing with the woman’s blood in his residence during a search. DNA analysis has become so sensitive that someone could conceivably shake your hand– transferring your DNA onto their skin–and then they could go out commit a crime and transfer your DNA to that crime scene without you even being there. This is one incredible story! Take one super-evasive serial killer + add an obsessed writer (#mypeople) and a clearly inventive and thinking outside the box detective; simmer for 20 years and wow. What a story! I’ll link to the newspaper accounts, but simplified, the detective came up with the idea to take the DNA recovered from the crime scene and upload it to a genealogy site under a fake profile, hoping to match to a family member.
