TECH TUES: GEEK GIRLS RULE!

As a writer my interest and my BRAND is smart girls doing things. These are the types of stories that get under my skin and get me excited. In my Erin Blake series: To Catch A Killer and To Right The Wrongs my protagonist Erin, and her friends use home-taught forensics and their high school bio lab to catch killers! Now I’m researching a new project set in the world of tech and consumer electronics.

Have you noticed how the internet IS the new crime scene and Cyber-crime-stopping IS the new forensics? What’s your relationship to integrated electronics — i.e. inert objects connected to the internet? Like for example a doorbell used to just function in only one way. NOW…a doorbell is a many faceted operation which will allow you to answer your door when you are not even at home. Yes. That’s right. We have it all at our house…or as much as we can afford and mostly at my insistence. We even have A-word (which is what we call Alexa when we want to talk about her but don’t want her injecting herself into the conversation.)

My new project still features smart girls but instead of forensics I’m looking at the new wave of inexpensive consumer electronics geared specifically for geek girls like ME!

There are a number of companies making, creating and blogging about items to interest this demographic and a trip to a Maker Faire (I went to Denver, CO last year) you’ll see girls out in DROVES for this awesome, awesome stuff. A Maker Faire, for those who don’t know, is crafty stuff at the intersection of TECH and ART. Here you will find everything from Battle Bots to how-to Furry cosplay to steampunk to build your own electronics and MORE.

To see what I’m talking about, check out the 10 Back-to-school Projects to celebrate Fall from SparkFun Electronics here. There are at LEAST two items on this list that I can’t wait to do.

Also Adafruit’s Electronic Halloween here. Totally on the to-do list as well! Trust, we will be the cool Trick or Treat house this year… no contest.

This is a DIY Dia de Los Muertos pin. I soldered on the LED eyes and the holder for the battery. Look for more electronics stuff to show up here. I am getting my geek girl on BIG TIME and loving every minute of it!
