TECH TUES: Gearing up the Geek

As I mentioned in a previous blog I’m researching a new project which involves TECH stuff aimed at geek girls like ME! I proudly claim to be a Geek Girl, which means I LOVE all things tech + geek. However, full disclosure: I’m not exactly competent with the hands-on applications. While I read a lot about it, I don’t actually code…or hack…or McGyver chips together (unless it’s with salsa.) But that has to change. If I’m going to put it out there that Geek Girls do awesome stuff I need to get more into the doing part of the equation.

It turns out there are baby steps for learning how to use the varied inexpensive (but impressively awesome) electronic tech. My education started with learning how to solder. This could not be easier or more fun with a Sparkfun.com soldering badge. The one I tried was a Dia de los muertos pin ($6.95) that you can find here. (Note: these pins are backordered, but there are other super-cool soldering badges, a unicorn a night light and even a flashlight.)

Sparkfun’s instructions walk you through how to solder the LEDs in place for the eyes, plus attach the battery holder and the post for the pin. It’s super easy and takes about 10 min. start to finish. I’d say even an 8 year-old could easily slam-dunk this task with close supervision. Sparkfun also sells inexpensive soldering irons and the other required supplies.

Sparkfun has in depth tutorials for soldering, how to choose a soldering iron and all the info you need to get your Geek on! Just search around on their website. You won’t be disappointed.

Now that my soldering skills are locked down I’m ready to progress to something more difficult. Our next project uses parts from the ADAFRUIT Halloween subscription box plus a glass cloche from Ikea and a plastic skull and flower from the dollar store. Stay TUNED awesome is on its way. (More about Adafruit in a future post.)
